Although inspired by my daily walks in a nearby nature preserve, the genesis of these variations-on-a-theme can be traced to a highly stylized, three-dimensional, African artifact that has been in my possession for many years depicting a sleek heron: a case of art mirroring memory. I am intrigued by the elusive nature of these beautiful animals as they soar above us and/or seek protection amongst the trees and surrounding vegetation. The medium of collage is ideally suited to exploring, through an interplay of positive and negative forms, the dichotomies of light and dark, i.e. day and night.
